Glenn Gould A State Of Wonder Rar3/12/2021
I dont know what liberties Gould took with the score, but its the best Bach performance Ive ever heard. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding.Does it start with the later tracks or am I just listening too quietly OK, I am on CD2 and the humming is loud and clear.Does anyone know -- Is this the re-issue of the 1981 recording where they decided NOT to use the digital tape as a basis but instead the analog tape that was back then meant to be the backup only, because they found that the analog recording sounds so much better at the end of the day I know for sure that the analog tape was used for A re-issue, I am just asking if this is the one.
Incidentally, the set is not complete in the true (i.e. Gould recorded a live version of the Goldberg variations sometime in the 60s before he decided not to perform on stage any more. It was released back then, and I saw it several times on CD, too. Also, I dont know if anyones noticed this yet, but both Goldbergs in SOW are HDCD-encoded. If you want to hear a truly shattering account of the Variations, try the DVD-V from Sony of Gould playing the Goldberg Variations. The audio quality is rather bad (theres a very apparent wobble in the piano tone), but the performance really transcends it. Many may have heard me comment in other threads that I did not care for Bachs piano works. I did not, that is, until I received this album recently. Violin and piano concertos and sonatas are my preferences, and I have heard many, many piano recordings. It is unbelieveable that I have never heard of these recordings before a few weeks ago, for they are the best piano works I have ever heard. My distaste for Bach aside, Gould plays with a passion and feel for the music that I have never before experienced, particularly in the 1981 set. The reason I probably have never heard these works is because I have generally not explored historic recordings, opting instead to buy newer, budget recordings by Naxos and EMI. What a mistake that has been There are a handful of masterpieces that bring tears to my eyes upon serious listening. But I gotta give props to Gould for popularizing this work in particular, and kicking off a Bach revival in general, for that we owe him a great debt. I find the humming distracting (more so on quiter passages), the performance is great, but IMHO marred by the humming. Schiffs 2003 performance I really enjoy, and is also well recorded. Scott. What was really striking to me was that its the first time that Ive really found Bach enjoyable. Like gpalmer I wasnt turned on by the 55 recording because it sounding much the way Ive heard most of Bachs music performed - precise, mechanical and simply dull to hear (remember Mozart apeing Bachs mechanical style of play in Amadeus). But the second cd - the 1981 recording - has a wonderful sense of expression that I never experienced with Bachs music before.
